Laminate flooring is a multi-layer synthetic flooring product, fused together with a lamination process. Laminate flooring simulates wood (or stone, in some cases) with a photographic applique layer under a clear protective layer. The inner core layer is usually composed of melamine resin and fibre board materials. There is sometimes a glue backing for ease of installation. It has the advantages that it is durable, attractive, and at a lower cost than natural floor materials.

Note that laminate flooring is distinctly different from wood flooring.

You’ll need a tape measure, hand saw and jigsaw, spacers, a pencil and a carpenter’s square.

If you’re fitting onto these surfaces at ground level, you’ll need a plastic damp-proof membrane as well as a soundproofing foam underlay.

Laminate boards simply click together, there’s no need for glue at all.

Divide your room width by the plank width before you start and trim the width of the first row of planks if necessary. Make sure the correct expansion gaps are left around the perimeter of your room, and round radiator pipes. Decide if you want to remove the skirting or finish with edging to conceal the expansion gap at the edges.
