choosing a carpet

We will help you make the right choice.

If you want your floor to fit in with an existing colour scheme, why not pop into our show room and select a few samples to take home. Richard can visit by appointment to suit you and measure your room/s. We have 100’s of carpet samples to choose from. Alternatively, you might want a neutral floor that will blend with changing colour schemes or to be bold with your floor, letting it take the lead in your room’s design.

We have a wide range of carpets which offers a wide variety of carpet types and fibres. There are a number of things you need to think about when deciding what type of carpet you want:

  • Where will the carpet be fitted?
  • Will it receive heavy wear?
  • How long do you expect your carpet to last?
  • How important are looks versus practicality?
  • Do you have any pets?
  • What type of carpet is right for you?

Carpet fibres

Wool
Naturally resilient, wool will recover quickly from foot traffic and furniture. It is warm, soft and easy to clean. Wool is an environmentally friendly option.
Nylon
Nylon is extremely hard-wearing and easy to clean. It blends well with other fibres to improve overall wear performance.
Polypropylene
Polypropylene is highly stain resistant and hard wearing. It is easy to clean and very colour fast.

Polyester
Polyester is often used in saxony style carpets. It has a lustrous appearance and good stain resistance.

Carpet types

Twist
One of the most popular carpet types in the UK. Tightly twisted to give a more defined, textured surface. A hard wearing style, less likely to show footprints and cleaner marks.
Loop pile
Level loop is seen in popular “Berber” style, often in neutral shades. Multi-level loop creates a textured effect. Can be vulnerable to pets getting claws into the loops of the pile.
Saxony
Straight cut longer pile for a sumptuous feel.
Shaggy Style
Long pile to create a deep, luxurious feel.
Velvet Pile
Dense, low pile with a smooth, luxurious finish. More likely to show footprints and vacuum cleaner marks.
Cut and Loop Pile
Different pile heights create a sculptured effect.
Axminster
Traditional method generally used for creating patterned carpet. Pile yarns and backing fabric are woven together at the same time.
Wilton
The oldest method of weaving carpet. Can be used for patterned or plain carpet.

Subtle patterns tend to work better in smaller spaces, while bold designs suit larger areas.

Carpets are made from wool or man made fibres or a combination of the two. Each has it’s advantages: while wool is soft and retains its pile well, synthetics can be ultra stain resistant.

The simple rule is buy the best underlay you can afford. A good underlay will improve the look, feel, insulation and wearability of your carpet. Sponge rubber underlay is soft and luxurious while recycled crumb rubber and polyurethane underlay is a more environmentally-friendly option.

Carpet suits most areas of the home, there are even carpets suitable for bathrooms and kitchens. If in doubt, ask us to help.

The amount of footfall across your floor is a major consideration and different fibres and blends can be more hardwearing. Again, we are happy to advise you.
